How much do security screens cost?

There's no honest single number, because every screen is made to measure. Here's what moves the price, and how to compare quotes properly.

If you've collected a few quotes, you've probably noticed they don't line up. That's usually not because one company is gouging. It's because the quotes are for different products, different numbers of openings, and sometimes different definitions of “security screen”.

What drives the price

1. The product range

The infill is the biggest single factor. In the Prowler Proof range, ForceField 316 stainless steel mesh is the premium option, Protec perforated aluminium sits in the middle, and welded Diamond Grille is the most affordable.

2. Doors versus windows

A security door costs more than a window screen. It's bigger, it carries a lock and hinges or rollers, and it has to stand up to being opened all day.

3. Size and number of openings

Each screen is built to the exact opening. Large sliding doors and big windows cost more than small ones, and a whole-house job is priced per opening.

4. Locks

Every door we fit comes with a Lockwood 3-point locking system as standard. Keying several doors alike is included when they're ordered together.

5. The install

Two-storey windows, unusual openings and removing old screens all take more time.

How to compare quotes fairly

  • Is it a security screen or a flyscreen? A flyscreen or a light barrier screen is cheaper because it isn't built to stop anyone.
  • Is it tested? Ask whether the product is tested to Australian Standards. Our guide on what makes a screen compliant explains what to look for.
  • How is the frame joined? Welded corners don't loosen the way screws and rivets can.
  • What does the warranty actually do? A replacement warranty and a repair warranty are very different things in year eight.
  • Who measured? A quote from photos is an estimate. A measured quote is a price.

Why we don't compete on price alone

A cheap screen that sags, rattles or fails a break-in attempt isn't cheap. We'd rather quote a product we're happy to come back and look at in ten years.
